About Judith FischerBorn in Budapest, Hungary, Judith Fischer emigrated to Canada in 1968. She was educated at the Alberta College of Art, where she graduated, in 1979, with a diploma in the visual arts. The first period of her career as a painter was spent in Calgary, from 1974 to 1984. During that time exhibitions of her work were held in well-known galleries located in Edmonton, Calgary and other cities. Her work was purchased by many public, corporate and private collections.
In 1984 she moved with her family to Victoria, where she presently resides. Since then she has been an active participant at the local art scene. She has exhibited her work in many solo and juried group shows throughout the province, as well as Toronto, ON; Beijing – China; and Washington, DC. With her first visit to BC, in 1972, she felt the irresistible urge to create and develop a uniquely national artistic style, which would contain the rich motifs and character of the west coast First Nations art. She wanted to create her own totems which would bridge western art, the ancient native culture of North America, and the European style. In her latest paintings she is not merely recording the surface of life, but she projects forms and ideas which are beyond restricted, tangible reality. Even if the forms and colours of nature are used as a point of departure, the final product is a kind of "Post Cubism". Here the forms gain the right to an independent existence. A number of these acrylic paintings found their way into public and private collections. Solo Exhibitions2006 Shir HaShirim: Song of Songs -- Wings of Peace Gallery, Victoria, BC
